What is Pilates?
Developed by Joseph Pilates as an exercise program for injured dancers and soldiers Pilates strengthens and aligns the body from the core out.
Focusing on the mind-body connection, Pilates emphasizes slow, precise movement on the breath, in order to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment, flexibility and body awareness.
There are two different kinds of Pilates classes: Pilates mat classes and Pilates classes that use equipment – most commonly the Reformer. Pilates mats are a bit thicker than yoga mats. Reformer classes are named after the piece of equipment – a sliding platform with springs and pulleys, which is used to create resistance and therefore strength.
We teach Stott Pilates® which is a modernized version of Pilates, developed by principle ballerina Moira Stott. The basic principles remain the same, but the postural alignment, the props and the sequencing of exercises are different – based on more modern theories of alignment and sequencing. We have Stott Pilates® equipment including the Stott Pilates® Reformer, the Chair – which is used to help create stability, and the so-called Cadillac for mobility. We also offer Stott Pilates® mat classes.
The benefits of Pilates include improved flexibility, increased muscle strength and tone – especially of the core muscles, improved posture, improved concentration and stress management.
