Grief Support Group for Disenfranchised Loss

4 Sessions: Thursdays, May 23rd, 30th, June 6th, 13th, 2024

6:00 PM to 7:15 PM

We acknowledge that grief isn’t limited to traditional losses. Disenfranchised loss occurs when your grief is not fully recognized or validated by society. This could include the loss of an ex-spouse, a beloved pet, a job, a dream, or other experiences that hold deep personal significance.

The Only Constant In Life Is Change,” wrote the Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, over 2,000 years ago. As individuals and in community, by choice or by happenstance, nothing remains the same. Physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually, we grow, and yet sometimes our growth feels paused by loss.

As things change, we may experience it as though we are losing parts of ourselves, the way we used to do things, communities we belonged to, physical or cognitive abilities, and people we love. This creates grief. Grief is not linear, and we cycle through stages over and over as we heal.

David Kessler, is a world-renowned expert on grief and loss, and he added a sixth stage to the original five devised by Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross many decades ago. This sixth stage of grief – finding meaning – is what helps us to remember with “more love than pain” (Kessler). At Body Positive Works, we walk beside you as you step along each stepping stone of the grief process.

Understanding Grief & Loss

Navigating the Journey of Grief: Piecing Together Our Hearts

When the profound loss of someone dear to us strikes, we find ourselves grappling with a myriad of emotions – a profound sense of loss, uncertainty, and an overwhelming wave of sadness, anger, or confusion. It’s as if the very essence of our being has been altered, leaving us adrift in a sea of questions, wondering who we are now that we are no longer someone’s grandchild, child, sibling, spouse, partner, friend, or parent.

In the midst of this heart-wrenching experience, a poignant tale unfolds – a story of a heart shattered into countless shards, each fragment carrying a piece of our pain and love. Like delicate birds, these shards take flight, scattering across the vast expanse of emotions. Time passes, and one by one, these pieces start to return. Slowly, ever so gradually, they find their way back to us, rekindling the spark of hope.

As we traverse the intricate path of grief, one piece at a time, our hearts begin to mend. These fragments, once scattered, start to fall back into place, forming a beautiful mosaic of our memories, love, and resilience. With each piece that returns, we embrace a renewed understanding of ourselves and the profound bond we shared with our loved one.

At Body Positive Works, we offer a compassionate space for those journeying through grief. Our heartfelt support and understanding allow you to explore your emotions, memories, and experiences at your own pace. We know that healing is not about forgetting, but rather about honoring the beautiful tapestry of love that intertwines our hearts with those we have lost.

Join us in this transformative process of piecing together our hearts, finding solace in the memories, and discovering the strength to cherish life’s precious moments, even amidst the ache of loss. Together, we will navigate the labyrinth of grief, finding hope in the beauty of healing and the enduring love that binds us forever.
