How The Embody Love Movement® Helped Me Change My Thoughts About My Body by Jen Kraft
This morning I was in the gym locker room after going for a swim. I started chatting with a 59 year old triathlete and swim coach who had just finished her swim as well. She lamented that no matter what she does, she just can’t get any faster. “I mean, my body feels good and it’s great for my mind, but I still want to be faster. I look around and wonder why I’m not as fast as everyone else.” She’s actually a pretty amazing swimmer…but somehow it wasn’t enough. It’s never enough.
I could empathize. I too had suffered from “Not Enoughness” for as long as I can remember. Not enough until I ran x number of miles. Not enough until I reached a certain number on the scale. Not enough until every single person liked me. Not enough until I could do a handstand in the middle of the room (I still can’t and I’m a teacher now!).
Then I met Dr. Melody Moore. I discovered Melody several years ago when I read her chapter in the must read book Yoga and Body Image. In it, she very candidly describes her own struggles with her body image and how yoga had helped to heal her.
Having had a lifelong struggle with body image and an eating disorder in college, I related to everything Melody said. I knew I had to meet her.
In 2014, I flew to Dallas to meet Melody and take her Embody Love Movement facilitator training. In that training, something clicked. Melody talked about the concept of “enoughness”. ” Enoughness” means that we are actually born ENOUGH, that we are ENOUGH now, and that we will always be ENOUGH. Not “enough when” I lose those 5 pounds or when everybody loves me or when I work out every single day. ENOUGH NOW.
Melody changed the way I think about myself. She also changed my yoga practice…for example I am no longer embarrassed that I can’t do a handstand in the middle of the room! And I now take pride in my ability to come into a restful pose during my practice, rather than judge myself by how many chaturangas I did.
If it hadn’t been for Melody, I’m pretty sure that The Body Image Boutique would not be here now. She inspired me and helped to lead me down this path. I’m so happy that I now have a place to offer the inspiring & empowering Embody Love Movement workshops to girls and women so that I can spread this crucial message of ENOUGHNESS.
