What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy doesn’t require artistic talent. It uses the power of the creative process as a vehicle for healing, communication, self-expression, celebration and personal development.
Its purpose is to help people better understand their feelings and behavior and resolve deeply held issues. It is a positive way to access, explore, express and heal inner feelings, stresses and experiences not available through other means and as such is a powerful way of knowing yourself.
Using creative techniques such as drawing, painting, collage, clay and coloring, our art therapist enables the student to express themselves artistically and explore the inner feelings and emotions feeding their art. The artwork can be used to help reawaken long buried memories and tell stories that may reveal unconscious beliefs.
Art Therapy Benefits
Art therapy has many benefits. It can help children, teens, and adults communicate and focus, relieve stress, anxiety and depression, unlock emotions, address trauma and PTSD, improve self-esteem, manage addictions, and cope with a variety of conditions from autism to mental illness.
Why Choose Us?
We offer group art therapy, and also a completely personalized service based around the individual’s needs. Our Art Therapist will get some background around why you have chosen art therapy and what she can offer, and together you will come up with a plan that works for you both.
Body Positive Works is a judgment free zone. Once you begin creating your art work, your Art Therapist will observe your process, without criticism. When you have finished, and sometimes while you are still working on it, your therapist will not put a value judgment on your work but will instead ask you to share your experience – how you’re feeling, what’s easy or challenging, and what’s coming up for you –unlocking feelings or emotions that might otherwise be hard to express.
Our Art Therapy Classes
This unique approach can help people of all ages. No art experience is necessary, only an openness for self reflection and transformation.
Our Art Therapist offers group art therapy, and individual sessions, for adults and children.
She also offers women's circles using art therapy and the expressive arts. A women’s circle offers a safe space for women to gather to celebrate the wise and creative woman within all of us. It’s an opportunity to give true expression to our voice, to express ourselves freely, and to be truly heard and seen. The circle is a supportive community for women to step into their strength and be their authentic selves. In the circle we use art therapy (painting, drawing and crafting) and the expressive arts (dancing, chanting and singing), alongside the calming practice of meditation, to access our joy and power.
