What is Depression?
Depression symptoms include persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, despondency and dejection. Signs of depression include losing interest in things you used to enjoy, feeling tearful, and physical symptoms like tiredness, trouble sleeping, loss of sex drive and appetite.
The causes may be a single event – like a bereavement or divorce, but sometimes there is no specific reason.
The more symptoms you have and the longer they have gone on, the more likely you are to experience crippling depression.
Remember that you are not alone – roughly one in ten Americans suffer depression at some point in their lives – it can affect anyone – men, women, children, the elderly and everyone in between. Teenage depression and postpartum depression can be particular challenges – when your experience, or your loved one’s experience, doesn't look the way it “should.”
Contrary to what some people may tell you, depression is not a sign of weakness or something you can just “snap out of”. It’s a serious illness and we take it seriously.
